Everyday life
Baza is the Altiplano's main shopping and service centre. The town has traditional bakeries and pastry shops, cafés, tapas bars, restaurants, independent food shops and several larger supermarkets. Residents can also find butchers, greengrocers, pharmacies, banks, household shops, clothing stores, garages, builders' merchants and a broad choice of professional services.
The town centre and neighbourhood shopping areas cover most weekly needs, while the municipal market and regular street-market activity are useful for fresh produce and local goods. Baza also has the Hospital de Baza, health centres, schools and sports facilities.

Village guide
One of the historic centres of the Granada Altiplano, Baza combines an old town, surrounding cave districts and a long history shaped by Iberian, Roman, Islamic and Christian periods.
Past & heritage
Baza grew from the Iberian settlement of Basti, whose importance is reflected in the fourth-century BC Lady of Baza. The Romans developed the town as Basti, and after centuries of Islamic rule it became a fortified frontier centre of the Nasrid kingdom. Following its capture by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489, churches, convents and noble houses reshaped the town, while its market role continued to serve the surrounding Hoya de Baza. Today the archaeological sites, old medina street pattern, Alcazaba remains and cave districts reveal those successive layers of history.
Local life
Cascamorras is Baza's defining tradition. On 6 September the colour-covered runner arrives from Guadix in an attempt to reach the Virgen de la Piedad without being stained; the celebrations continue around the patron's feast on 8 September. Semana Santa, the Feria de Baza in September and Santa Bárbara on 4 December add processions, music, food and neighbourhood events to the annual calendar.

A closer look
Baza offers the broadest range of day-to-day services in the Altiplano, making it a practical choice for buyers who want supermarkets, healthcare, schools, tradespeople, restaurants and professional services within easy reach. The centre has a livelier feel than the surrounding villages, while cave districts and rural areas on the edge of town offer a quieter setting.
The town sits between the Hoya de Baza landscape and the Sierra de Baza. Buyers can combine town life with walking, cycling and countryside trips, while using Baza as a base for exploring the cave villages to the north and east.
Baza may suit permanent residents who want convenience, families who need regular services, and buyers who prefer not to depend on a smaller village for every appointment or major shop. Check traffic, parking and walking distance carefully because properties described as “Baza” can range from central streets to outlying cave districts and countryside.
