Benamaurel for property buyers

What to know before you view

Benamaurel is strongly associated with the Altiplano's cave-dwelling heritage, including historic excavated sites around the Guardal landscape.

When viewing cave homes here, look closely at drainage, ventilation, access, exterior land and how rooms have been excavated or altered. Confirm that the registered description and boundaries match what you are buying.

Buyer check: Always verify ownership, registration, planning status, boundaries, alterations and any required energy documentation with appropriate professionals before purchase.

Everyday life

Local amenities

Benamaurel has useful everyday village services, including local bread and pastry shops, small supermarkets and food stores, butchers and a selection of bars and cafés. The village also has a pharmacy, local health services, schools, banking facilities and municipal sports amenities.

Bars are an important part of village life and are useful places for breakfast, tapas and meeting neighbours. Choice is naturally smaller than in Baza, and opening days can vary, particularly outside summer and fiesta periods. Baza is the usual destination for large supermarkets, specialist shopping and hospital services.

For property buyers: Check whether the home is within walking distance of the centre. Cave areas and outlying hamlets can be peaceful but may require a car for bread, groceries, prescriptions and other daily needs.

Things to do in Benamaurel

Meet the animals at Cortijo Búho

Set in the countryside near Benamaurel, Cortijo Búho offers a relaxed and personal wildlife experience in the surroundings of a historic cave home. Visitors can meet a special collection of owls, birds of prey and other animals, each with its own character and story.

This is not a conventional zoo. Visits are interactive and educational, normally lasting around two hours, with opportunities to learn about the animals and take photographs. There is no entrance fee, although donations are welcomed to help support their continuing care.

Advance booking is essential. Children are welcome but must remain calm and supervised because the welfare of the birds and animals comes first.

Past & heritage

A little history

The Guardal valley around Benamaurel has supported settlement since prehistoric times, with Iberian and Roman evidence showing its long strategic and agricultural importance. During the medieval Islamic period, communities used the soft cliffs for dwellings and defensive spaces; the remarkable Hafas overlooking the river preserve this excavated heritage. After the Christian conquest, the village developed around farming, livestock and water from the valley, while cave neighbourhoods remained an essential part of local life rather than a curiosity from the past.

Local life

Fiestas & traditions

The Moros y Cristianos in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza are the great expression of Benamaurel's identity. Comparsas fill the streets with costume, music and processions, while Los Papeles — a traditional spoken drama — recounts the symbolic struggle between the two sides. The image leaves its chapel on the last Saturday of April, and the main programme normally continues through the following Tuesday, bringing families and former residents back to the village.
